What is a UTI?

A UTI is an infection of the urinary system, which includes the kidneys, bladder, ureters, and urethra. The infection may occur in any part of the urinary system.

Your urine is a waste product made by your kidneys that helps eliminate excess fluid and electrolytes. Normally, your urine is germ-free and easily moves through your urinary system without any problems.

However, when bacteria get into this system, usually through the urethra, they cause inflammation and infection, leading to pain and difficulty urinating. 

UTIs are a very common infection, especially in women who have a shorter urethra than men.

What are the symptoms of a UTI?

UTIs cause inflammation of the lining of the urinary tract. This inflammation causes symptoms such as:

• Pain or burning during urination
• Pressure in your lower pelvis
• Frequent urination
• Blood in your urine
• Cloudy urine
• Strong-smelling urine
• Fever

What are the treatments for a UTI?

Antibiotics are the primary treatment for a UTI. The team at Minit Medical Urgent Care and Physical Therapy prescribes your antibiotic and gives you specific instructions on how to take it. You must finish your antibiotic as instructed to prevent a recurrence of your UTI.

The team also recommends drinking plenty of fluids to help flush out the infection. They recommend returning for a follow-up visit if you continue to have symptoms or your symptoms get worse. 

When left untreated, a UTI can lead to a kidney infection and kidney damage.
